Man City – Limited Edition Chinese New Year Shirt

Man City have released a limited edition Chinese New Year shirt to coincide with the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, which begins later this month on the 22nd January.

The upcoming new year is the year of the Rabbit which symbolises speed, agility and quick wits. This, coincidentally, is very similar to Man City’s style of play as they have a very fast paced fluid front line including superstar Erling Haaland, England prodigy Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and others.

Man City currently sit second in the Premier League table, 5 points adrift of Arsenal but the season has been dominated by Erling Haaland, who is on course to smash the Premier League goal record, as he currently sits on 21 goals just halfway into the season.

The limited-edition kit is a darker shade of blue compared to City’s sky blue home kit and has a cool gold trim. Almost all football shirts containing a bit of gold fly off the shelves and that is reflected in the sales of the new shirt as it already is sold out – that’s a first for Man City!

Back to the shirt design, the background print is a close up of the moon relating to China’s first successful moon surface exploration mission rover - The Jade Rabbit - and the gold trim is symbolic for the success of this mission. The shirt design also links to Man City’s anthem, blue moon, which is sung at every home match. The players will now literally be wearing a blue moon. Although, it has not officially been confirmed when or if the Manchester club will actually wear the shirt in an official match.

Man City posted a promotional video to go along with the shirt release, with Ederson, De Bruyne and Haaland featuring as well as a trip to Manchester’s Chinatown. You can watch the full promotional video here.
